Wharenui
We have been learning about wharenui because we will be going to a marae.
The Wharenui
A wharenui represents an important Maori ancestor. It is also like a book because
it has so many stories.Sometimes people go there for happy things like weddings
and birthdays but sometimes they go for a sad reason like a funeral.

At the top of the wharenui is the koruru/head. The maihi/Arms come out beside
the koruru. Behind the Koruru is the tahuhu/spine. The heke/ribs come off the
tahuhu. In the middle of the wharenui is a big and wide pole. That is the
poutokomanawa/heart. At the end of the maihi there are the raparapa/hands .
The back wall has photos of the people from the tribe who has past away.
